Rarest of rare cases
a couple of days ago, we came across a case of congenital shortening of middle phalanges of the medial 4 fingers and the lateral 4 toes(the great toe`s and thumb`s proximal phalanges were shortened). it was one of the rarest cases according to our professor- he had never seen such a case and it has not even been mentioned in our books.
it was a 6 year old girl who presented with deformed fingers and toes with difficulty in moving them. she could not write properly, but could walk alright. on x-ray, the shortened phalanges were detected. the deformity of the index finger did look like the one in the above x-ray, but i am not sure whether the above x-ray shows any shortening of phalanges....
our professor told her parents that nothing could be done right now, but maybe after the epiphyses have fused, prostheses may be tried....
